Portage Hotel

The Portage Hotel, located downtown at Main Street and Market Street, replaced the former Empire House Hotel in 1912 and served as Akron’s leading hotel until the opening of the modern Mayflower Hotel in 1931.

This Day In History

1851 On this day in 1851, Sojourner Truth addresses the First Black Women's Rights Convention.
1907 On this day in 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt's train stopped in Akron on its way to Indianapolis. While waiting for the train to be switched, Roosevelt hiked into the countryside and made a surprise visit to the home of Frank Thomas, a local farmer.
