Peoples Hospital

Construction on Akron’s new hospital was completed in 1915. The building was located on West Cedar Street and had 125 beds. In 1916, a separate facility was added to house the hospital’s nurses.

The Werner Printing Company established its dominance in the world of print long before Akron’s rubber boom. By 1900 the Werner Company was the largest and most complete book factory in America. Legal battles with Encyclopedia Britannica over copyright issues, which the Werner Company ultimately won, resulted in financial losses that ultimately destroyed the company.

City Hospital

In 1989 Akron’s City Hospital and St. Thomas Hospital merged to form the Summa Health. The new company runs a network of hospitals including Akron, Barberton, St. Thomas, and Western Reserve.

Construction on the current church building began in 1902, and opened in 1905. It features a German Baroque Romanesque style of architecture and was designed by noted Akron-born architect William P. Summit County Jail, Akron, Ohio

Built in 1902, the old jail was located between High Street and S. Broadway Street in downtown Akron. Inside were living quarters for the county sheriff and cells for up to 100 prisoners. The stunning sandstone building was destroyed in 1965 and replaced by the new City-County Safety Building.
