Akron’s boom came from the rubber industry,  but before that, it was an important canal town, a regional center for milling and a notable mass-producer of clay products.

This Day In History

1912 On this day in 1912, President William Howard Taft became the first sitting President to make a planned trip to Akron. Upon his arrival at the Union Depot, Taft was given a half-hour automobile tour of the city and spoke at the East Market St. Dancing Academy.
1922 On this day in 1922, The Akron Art Museum, then called Akron Art Institute, opened in two rooms on the ground floor of the Akron Public Library on East Market Street.
